This whole idea is to row the equivalent of the distance between England (Penzance) and the continental body of America and that is why I have chosen Miami. It is a 'virtual' journey although I try to adhere to some basic principles of navigation and Atlantic currents. One rule is that I must 'row' every mile so although in reality I would be driven by ocean currents, I can show where they may have quickly carried me, but do not count towards my quest. I'm joined by Pete (the propeller) Higgins in between his squad training for the coming 'Paralympics'.

If you look carefully at the map kindly provided by 'Google' you may notice that we're heading to Madeira? I could quite easily swing west and head for the Azores to make the journey shorter but that would be the route of a lick-spittle and I promised to swing by Porto Santo much further south. I also decided to look well ahead and used 'Street-View' to look at Miami so we would know exactly where were were to land! Tricky! It appears that Miami is chock full of boats and I'm worried that we'll get run down as we complete our adventure. I shall need some forward planning.
Added to that, I recalculated the miles covered with a more accurate Km to Mile converter and found that I was five miles behind where I thought I was so I've had a miserable time in the gym making up the 'lost' distance. With my new calculation I hope that this will not happen again?
While talking to a pal who showed interest in rowing I thought of the idea of a monthly 'guest crew member' but Ron M suggested that I was beginning to sound like the owner of a galley or a viking longboat who offered a share of rape and plunder as wages. As my only claim to fame is a repeating blister on my bottom (darn the mark one blister deflector failing at just the moment I was on for a P.B.) there seems little chance in the realm of plunder just now? Ron is now picturing me as Ragnar Hairy-Breeks or, better, as Ivar the Boneless. I quite like Urgan the Unusual. I leave that one for you to look up?
As Ron also suggested I should be going by Greenland and thus onward to Newfoundland or Gulf of St Lawrence, at this late stage I think not! The weather is far better where we are thank you. A modest 34 degrees and sunny.
Finally, before I return to the bottom destroyer, I must tell you all that Pete (the propeller) posted a new P.B. of 20km while I, not to be outdone, posted a new P.B. of 22.6km. A long way from the modest 8km we once posted. Will be back in two weeks as May turns to blazing June!
